Atom% values from surveys are based on sample, as received, and Scofield cross-sections. Atom% values are corrected for IMFP and PE.
Peak-fits are guides for practical, real-world applications. Peak-fits are not fully optimized or designed to test any theory.

Sulfides exist with Structural Differences
The oxidation state of Copper in CuS is not a formal 2+ state because Sulfur is present in various structural configurations that produce a 1:1 ratio for CuS.
In contrast, the oxidation state of Copper in CuS is a formal 1+ state.
This difference is one reason why CuS does not exhibit the expected Shake-up or Multiplet Splitting structures which appear for CuO.
